What Can You Find Inside the Refuse Bin Centre of a Wet Market and Hawker Centre

Do you know what waste goes into the refuse bin centres of our wet markets and hawker centres? We took a quick look at a refuse bin centre located at the Marine Parade Market and Food Centre. Here’s what you can find – food waste, styrofoam boxes, plastic disposables and carton boxes. See pictures below.

It’s not clear whether the waste at the bin centre is recycled. But there’s definitely scope for reducing and recycling the waste. The food waste can be sent for composting or digested to produce biogas. Some of the vegetables look fine and could be given to the needy if it’s safe to eat. The styrofoam and carton boxes can be recycled. The food stalls could also use reusable plates and utensils, instead of using plastic disposables.

I wonder how many styrofoam containers alone are used and thrown away in Singapore each day? Anyone care to guess?
